4. Mum and Dad decided to buy all the children coming to the party a present. It was important to spend the same amount on each child – but they didn’t know how many children were coming. There certainly weren’t to be more than ten.
What is the minimum amount of money they needed, to be able to divide it equally between all the children, irrespective of how many came to the party, and without leaving any change?
£25.20.This is the smallest amount that can be divided without remainder by all of 2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9 and 10 (it is the least common multiple)
5. Man A can mow a field in 2 hours
Man B can mow the same field in 3 hours
Man C can mow the same field in 4 hours
Man D can mow the same field in 5 hours
If they worked together at their respective rates how long would it take to mow the entire field?
47 minutes approximately (46.76 actual)
In one hour: Man A can mow 0.5 of a field; Man B can mow 0.333 of a field; Man C can mow 0.25 of a field; Man D can mow 0.2 of a field. Therefore working together for one hour they can mow 1.283 fields. So to mow one field takes 60 minutes divided by 1.283 which equals 46.76 minutes!
