DEFRA and APHA have today declared that an Avian influenza Prevention Zone has been implemented across Great Britain making it a legal requirement for all bird keepers to follow strict biosecurity measures.
Following an increase in the number of detections of avian influenza (bird flu) in wild birds and on commercial premises, the Chief Veterinary Officers from England, Scotland and Wales have declared an Avian Influenza Prevention Zone (AIPZ) across Great Britain to mitigate the risk of the disease spreading amongst poultry and captive birds.
This means that from midday today, it will be a legal requirement for all bird keepers in Great Britain to follow strict biosecurity measures to help protect their flocks from the threat of avian flu.
Implementing the highest levels of biosecurity measures on farm is the most effective way in reducing the risk of disease spreading and is the best way to protect flocks. The introduction of the AIPZ comes after the United Kingdom has faced its largest ever outbreak of avian flu with 190 cases confirmed across the United Kingdom since late October 2021, with over 30 of these confirmed since the beginning of the month. The East of England has been particularly badly hit with outbreaks in poultry and captive birds. There have also been outbreaks in the south west and in wild birds at multiple sites across Great Britain.
Avian influenza circulates naturally in wild birds and when they migrate to the United Kingdom from mainland Europe over the winter they can spread the disease to poultry and other captive birds. Maintaining strict biosecurity is the most effective method of protecting birds from the virus.
The AIPZ means bird keepers across Great Britain must:
The avian influenza prevention zone will be in place until further notice and will be kept under regular review as part of the government’s work to monitor and manage the risks of bird flu.

The AIPZ means bird keepers across Great Britain must:
- Keep free ranging birds within fenced areas, and that ponds, watercourses and permanent standing water must be fenced off (except in specific circumstances e.g. zoo birds).
- Clean and disinfect footwear and keep areas where birds live clean and tidy;
- Minimise movement in and out of bird enclosures;
- Reduce any existing contamination by cleansing and disinfecting concrete areas, and fencing off wet or boggy areas
- Keep domestic ducks and geese separate from other poultry.
- Ensure the areas where birds are kept are unattractive to wild birds, for example by netting ponds, and by removing wild bird food sources;
- Feed and water your birds in enclosed areas to discourage wild birds.
The avian influenza prevention zone will be in place until further notice and will be kept under regular review as part of the government’s work to monitor and manage the risks of bird flu.

2022 ... 210 years of the Sebright Club and we have a new Secretary and Treasurer!
Charles Pears has handed the reins over to Robin Creighton our Chairman, and we are wishing Robin all the very best in his new (additional) role!
A very big Thank You to Charles for all of his hard work and input as outgoing Secretary, whilst leading a really busy life and bringing up a young family. It certainly hasn't been an easy couple of years to keep the interest in the Fancy, with Covid and Avian Flu blighting shows and breeding programmes.
However, a New Year and hopefully a much brighter outlook for us all!

They warned all keepers to be extremely cautious with biosecurity and health measures and the show organisers have warned exhibitors and spectators to take extra precautions during and after the event.

Only one week to THE NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP POULTRY SHOW 2017 at The International Centre, Telford, Shropshire on Saturday 2nd & Sunday 3rd December 2017.
Our A.G.M will be held at 2.00pm in Room 3 on Saturday 2nd December.
It will be a busy week up and down the country as showmen add the final touches to their birds in preparation for this big event. However it is not just a final wash and titivate in the last few days, but the selective breeding programme to produce a bird worthy of winning at The National can go back years, even decades. If you are able to go along next weekend for a visit, you certainly won't be disappointed. The cacophony of thousands of birds as you enter the hall for the first time is something you will remember for ever! We hope you will head for the Sebright Stand where you will be made most welcome and can admire the best of our breed on show at this great occasion.

Rules and Restrictions for Shows and Showing
(The Poultry Club of Great Britain statement)
Is there a 13-day standstill?
. No. The reference to '13-days' within the general licence, is offered as a clarification, secondary to the definition of a bird-gathering, to provide a timeframe for those operating intermittent activities (such as internet sales) so that they can operate without being classified as a gathering.
. It is not a movement 'standstill' or a 'rule' and does not apply to a participant's own birds, or to a participant that attends a poultry gathering. In practice, this means that there are no legal restrictions on birds returning to their place of origin after attending a show.
Show organisers must still distribute biosecurity advice to participants under the terms of the general licence, with best practice recommendations that birds be inspected for signs of illness before travelling to shows and any birds travelling home from a show (returning stock or new) should be isolated from other birds at the premises and monitored for signs of illness for at least 7 days.
Further information is available online from Defra (www.gov.uk/guidance/bird-gatherings-licences), Welsh Gov (http://gov.wales/topics/environmentcountryside/ahw/poultry/?lang=en) & Scot Gov (follow link through Topics to Bird Gathering FAQ)

Gordon Sebright is very relieved to report that our CMS has at last provided the option to update our website format theme without a complete makeover.
The Sebright website has been live for 7 years now and as technology advances, changes are inevitable. It was no longer supported in it's original format and even the simplest of updates became impossible (like changing the colour of text!) However we are now back on track!
Please send in your photos, news and show results to [email protected]
So as Autumn arrives and the Chief Vet has given the UK the all clear on Avian Flu, we are off to a fantastic start for Sebrights!

As most of you will be aware now. I'm stepping down as Secretary at the end of this year. I shall be handing over to the new Secretary at The Federation Show next weekend. The new Secretary of the Sebright Club will be Mr Charles Pears.
At the A.G.M held at the National It was agreed that the Membership fee would go up from £8 to £10. This will come into effect from January 1st 2017. Any Membership fees paid before then will still be £8. I have a few membership fees outstanding. So if you could pay before the Federation or of course at the Federation, this would be appreciated. Jamie.
And on behalf of the President, Chairman, Committee and Sebright Club members we would like to thank Jamie for all of his hard work over the last four years as our Secretary and Treasurer.
He has developed the club's online and social media presence, forged new relationships with other Sebright clubs abroad and still managed to retain the inherent standard of our club that Sir John Sebright founded all those years ago. With absolute diligence and patience, Jamie has helped so many new members and encouraged and supported them with total dedication. We are indeed extremely fortunate that Jamie will still be part of our committee and will be able to inspire and to promote Sebrights, hopefully for many years to come.
We look forward to welcoming Charles as our new Secretary and wish him all the very best in his new role as part of our team.

Have you visited our Sebright Forum recently or our Facebook page - Sebright Club of Great Britain? Join in the discussions on fertility and breeding successes (and sometimes not such successes!) and the debate on incubator settings for the best hatch.
What sort of incubator do you use? Do you get chicks with twisted toes or splayed legs - and why is this? How successful have you been with setting eggs under a broody? We would love to hear your experiences and hopefully in the course of the conversation we can help throw some light on a few of the most common problems.
April/May and it's that time of the year again when the birds are busying themselves with laying eggs and we are all hatching a fine brood of 2016 chicks! Hoping you all have a most successful breeding season. Shows with Sebrights on display are limited at present, but please do keep any News or Results coming in. If you are a member who wishes to be added to the Breeders Directory then drop me an email. Thanks! Jamie [email protected]

Pictures of the prize-winning birds are now being added to our Photo Gallery.

We have three important Shows for Sebrights to look forward to during November and December and the first is this weekend on Sunday 3rd November. It is a Sebright Club Regional Show - the first to be held in the West Country - and has 9 Sebright classes. Hosted by the Cornish Bantam Fanciers' Society, it will be staged at the Royal Cornwall Agricultural Exhibition Centre in Wadebridge.
A lot of hard work has gone on behind the scenes to make sure it is a success - so even if you haven't entered a bird, do come along and chat with fellow exhibitors and breeders. We have a lot of new members in the Sebright Club from this area and it would be an ideal occasion to compare notes and meet like-minded enthusiasts!

Very many congratulations to Robin Creighton on winning Best Silver and Champion Sebright, with Reserve Champion Sebright and Best Gold going to Jamie Robinson. A really well deserved win for both Robin and Jamie (a similar story to The National in November this year!) and a true testament to the time and dedication they put in to their birds throughout the whole year. Well done both of you! Full results in the Shows 2012 section.
Saturday 15th & Sunday 16th December 2012
The National Federation of Poultry Clubs' Championship Show
The second of our two club shows is at Stafford and here we put on two additional special classes for novices - for those who have never won a first prize, nor indeed ever shown at a club show. It was an ideal opportunity to come along and discuss your birds with the Judges and experienced breeders - whether you had entered birds or not.
As with The National - we have specially designed Prize Cards as well as Rosettes, Banners and Balloons! There is dedicated staging on the balcony for the Sebrights at this Show and it will be another really exciting occasion.
Our Judge was Mr Christopher Parker, our President, Breeder, Exhibitor and Judge of Sebrights - not only in the UK, but across the world. And I know Chris won't mind us saying that he is also one of the most kind, hardworking and generous people in the Fancy.
And as if all this excitement weren't enough! We are taking bids on two trios of Sebrights for the club. Brian Sinker is very kindly supplying a trio of Silver Sebrights and Steve Fuller supplying a trio of Golds. The latter will be young relatives of Gordon Sebright (if you follow his antics) - Gabriel, Gloria and Grace! They won 1st prize at The National and their rosettes and cards from that show will go with them. Both trios are entered in the show classes on Saturday and will therefore be on display throughout the weekend. You can make your bid at the Sebright Club stand and the highest bidder and proud new owners of the Trios will be announced at 2p.m. on Sunday!
The Federation Championship Show will be held at The County Showground, Stafford.
ST18 0BD - See you there!
Thursday 22nd November 2012
At the Annual General Meeting of The Sebright Club held at The National Show last Saturday, 17th November 2012, the Committee and members present voted unanimously that Robin Creighton should represent us as our new Chairman. Brian Sinker, our former Chairman, who has also been our acting Secretary and Treasurer gave notice of his intention to stand down from this position at the last AGM in November 2011. Jamie Robinson was voted, unopposed, our new Secretary and Treasurer from immediate effect. We would like to thank Brian very much indeed for all his work, covering not only the one, but three jobs - and wish Robin and Jamie well in their new positions. Chris Parker remains our President and Allan Edward, Steve Fuller,
J.D. Kay and Brian Sinker form the rest of the body of the committee. We are indeed extremely fortunate to have such a strong club representation and the Sebright Club can only continue to go from strength to strength. Roll on another 200 years!
2012 heralded a very important and exciting year for The Sebright Club and we celebrated the Bicentenary of our Club recently at The National with specially designed Prize Cards as well as Rosettes, Banners, Balloons and a Gold and Silver-themed Dinner and Dance in our honour!
We offer our Congratulations to Robin Creighton on winning Best Silver and Champion Sebright again this year, with Reserve Champion Sebright and Best Gold going to Jamie Robinson. And many congratulations also to all the prize-winners - and indeed everyone that turned out their birds for the bicentenary show - they were a real credit to the breed. A special mention must be made about the winner of the Silver Cock class - young William Boden with Jerry - very well done Will! A boy among men - but you showed them how to do it!
We are very proud to recognise the longevity of The Sebright Club and celebrate the endurance of this beautiful breed which has given so much pleasure to so many people across the world, for over 200 years. And what better way it was than to start the year with Robin's Silver Pullet taking us into 2012 as the Supreme Show Champion from The National 2011.
We were delighted that our Judge this year was Mr J. David Kay - a very longstanding and loyal supporter of the Sebright Club and breeder and exhibitor of Sebrights. The results from the show classes are now available on the website (FACT - Shows - 2012) and pictures of the prize-winning birds will follow shortly!
A special mention also goes to Nicky Demaine for producing our specially designed Prize cards for both The National and The Federation, and for taking photos of the winning Sebrights - not only at these two big shows, but throughout the year also. Very many thanks, Nicky!
