The Dictionary defines Advent thus: The fact of an event happening, an invention being made, or a person arriving. For Christians Advent is the period of four weeks before Christmas.
We have an Advent Calendar that Auntie Bella sent us. And Day 1 is today, December 1st... or so we thought. But this year Advent starts on December 2nd. Does that mean that we will end up with an unopened door?
Apparently the Advent season is of variable length and the start date changes every year. It starts on the fourth Sunday before Christmas Day (Advent Sunday) which can fall between November 27th and December 3rd, and always ends on Christmas Eve. So you see we have a door spare. Next year is okay. Advent Sunday is December 1st. But in 2020 (if I am still around to see it) Advent begins on November 29th. Perish the thought. Two doors missing!
However, it matters not, as Auntie Bella's calendar has nice pictures behind each door. Now if it were mealyworms, it would be of the utmost importance!

Back to our calendar which should be called a December Calendar, not an Advent Calendar. And we have a snowy red front door with a wreath hanging on it. Mum is going to make a wreath for our door. She went to Wilkos last week and bought a ring of oasis. Dad is relieved. He thought he had to clamber up on the roof and get some moss for lining the coat hanger again. There is much history and symbolism associated with wreaths. They are usually made from evergreens and they represent strength as evergreens last through the harshest winters. Later we will help pick some ivy and holly and laurel to stick into Mum's oasis and perhaps some fir cones too, and berries to spruce it up.

You can wear a wreath on your head or around your neck you know. It doesn't have to have holly in it as that would be jolly prickly and scratchy. Love Gordon and Sylvia xxx
